Research conducted by Northeastern scientists touches our everyday lives
A team led by Paul Whitford (Northeastern University) and Jose Onuchic (Rice University), in collaboration with Yale researchers Walter Mothes and Wenwei Li, has made significant progress in understanding and combating SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind COVID-19. Their research, published in Science, combines theoretical modeling and experimental validation to uncover how the virus invades human cells and to develop strategies to prevent it.
The research offers insights into the conserved S2 domain of the spike protein, paving the way for vaccines effective against multiple COVID-19 strains and other coronaviruses. By combining simulations and imaging techniques, it showcases the power of interdisciplinary collaboration in designing next-generation treatments and improving pandemic preparedness.
