Attribution and Affiliation
Academic Home Attribution and ePAWS Affiliation (Impact) Data
Background
NU historically reports award obligations based the negotiated facilities and administrative (F&A) distribution credit split (also known as the indirect cost return or IDCR). While the F&A distribution credit split provides a useful metric for award activity, it does not necessarily reflect the contributions of the various units or individuals that were instrumental in successfully securing funding.
Attribution or Affiliation/Impact Data in ePAWs v1.0
Attribution assists the colleges/institutes/centers in representing their contribution to a proposal or award, independent of negotiated F&A distribution credit. Colleges, institutes, centers and other units (including those that do not exist in Banner) may request recognition for contributions to awards, via the new Attribution/Affiliation section in ePAWs v1.0. Attribution by Academic Home or Affiliation/Impact can be a direct contribution to a project or through the enablement of a proposed opportunity. The unit’s affiliation with a specific proposal is a separately captured data element and reportable field that does not affect the negotiated F&A distribution credit/IDCR.
Attribution by faculty’s member Academic Home:
For faculty where their negotiated F&A distribution credit as allocated to a non-college unit (e.g., an institute) the faculty member’s academic home will automatically be credited to the faculty member’s appointing college or for joint and several appointments to the respective colleges. Attribution by Academic Home, like Other Research Support, acknowledges the unit’s efforts in supporting the university’s strategic research efforts and counts toward the college’s FY College-Provost Goal.
Attribution by Affiliation (Impact):
Allows colleges, institutes, centers and other units (including those that do not exist in Banner) to request recognition for contributions to awards, via the new Attribution/Affiliation section in ePAWs v1.0. Attribution by Affiliation adds a data point that may be useful when assessing the comprehensive impact of a college or unit. While Attribution by Affiliation does not count toward the FY College-Provost Goal it does allow colleges and other units to capture data about those proposals and awards where they have made a meaningful contribution (e.g. enabling a proposal) or may also be used by units to identify affiliations that support internal strategic initiatives (e.g., Impact Engines awards). Creating an Attribution by Affiliation and assigning the corresponding value to that affiliation is within the discretion of the college or unit.
Capturing Attribution by Affiliation (Impact)
Proposal in Workflow
When an Investigator is added to a proposal, if there is a known default affiliation with the person, it will be brought into the record in the Attribution/Affiliation section in the Proposal tab:
- Once the proposal is saved, affiliations can be adjusted on a per record basis (e.g. added/percent updated/removed)
- if the Faculty’s affiliation with a unit has ended, or to add new default affiliations, contact the to request the default attribution be updated.
- The percentage of the recognition for the Affiliation defaults at 100%, and can be adjusted, as appropriate
- Dollars will be calculated (Percent X Total Proposal) once the record is updated at the Grant Officer stop with the Direct/Indirect dollar amounts
Proposal Completed
- Once the ePAWs record is completed, a new tab for Institute Proposal is created and the Proposal Affiliations are copied to it
- If necessary, Affiliations can be removed/updated/added by the NU-RES Help Center on the Institute Proposal Attribution/Affiliation tab; Dollars are calculated based on Percent X Total Proposal
Award Created
- Once an award is built and linked to the Institute Proposal, an Award tab appears in ePAWs; the information on the Institute Proposal tab are copied to the Award tab
- While the Institute Proposal Affiliations can still be updated on the Institute Proposal tab, those updates are only for the Institute Proposal; to update Award Affiliations, updates must be made to the Award Tab; Contact the to request an attribution be updated
- On the Award tab, dollars are not shown in ePAWs, as award obligations change year to year, and are in the Data Warehouse. ePAWs Award Attribution is calculated as actual FY obligations received X Percent on the ePaWs Award Tab year over year
